Unlocking Potential: Embracing the Power of Yet

While working with a young client recently, I got to see the change in them when we read a story about a magic word.
That magic word is 'YET'.
How many times have you said to yourself 'I can't do that'?
That's exactly what happened with this client. They had shared how they were having difficulty with something at school. Something they couldn't do, and they felt deflated by it, and hated the class.
We read the story book ... The power of yet, and translated that to their situation.
Bingo. Viola. Light bulb moment for them.
When they wrote out their sentence, and saw it on paper, it transformed the 'I can't do that', to 'I can't do that ... yet'.
I always liken it to walking into a gym and picking up a set of 10kg weights if you've not been exercising. You pick them up and they're heavy and you might say to yourself 'I can't use these weights'. But what if it's simply because your muscles aren't used to it, and you can't use them ... yet. You need to use them consistently over time so your muscles can use them.
The power of the word yet when applied to many situations is a total shift on how we see things. Without it, children can feel deflated, given up and not want to give something ago.
Add the word 'yet' to their 'I can't', and it is a whole different story.
